Nick Shivers' Success Unplugged

Barely finished high school, lived in his car... built a $135 million real estate business!

Nick was born and raised in Silverton, Oregon to a blue collar family and his parents joked about him being born in a drawer. He didn't have a crib but he had a drawer for a bed. As a kid, he wasn't top student material and was always in trouble. He was held back in kindergarten and was always challenged by other kids, and as a result, had a chip on his shoulder. This, though, taught him grit and he'd stick up for other kids who were being bullied.

Although, his dad encouraged him by saying  that he could be whatever he wanted to be, he wasn't given any direction and had no one to show him exactly how to be successful. Nick practically raised himself without much guidance, he barely finished high school, and went to eight different colleges.

For a time, he lived in his car while managing a health and fitness club. He, then, started living in the same gym where he met business owners who saw huge potential in him and wondered why he wasn’t doing something else on a grander scale. One business owner, who saw potential in Nick, gave him the book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People; which greatly contributed to his positive mental shift and a productive life. The book, along with other inspirational books he read, gave him one major take-away - if you start your day by setting goals and doing what it takes to meet those goals, you can be successful.

With this mind shift, he went from earning $10/hour as a fitness instructor to having his own windshield repair business, where he earned $300/day. His first sales stint was mostly about cold calling and door knocking but he wasn't easily discouraged by rejection. To him, every "no" meant going one step closer to getting a deal. Wanting to be more successful, he turned from his windshield repair business to complete windshield replacements where he was making even more money.  This was also when he first discovered he was skilled at delegation after he and his partner couldn't figure out how to replace a Porsche's windshield. He drove the Porsche to an auto-glass company where they installed the windshield for him and he ended up spending only a third of what the insurance company covered.  He never had to replace windshields himself from then on and stayed in that business for six years.

His passion for his windshield replacement business wore out, though, and he got bored with it. Right after marrying his wife and on their honeymoon, Nick decided that he would sell his windshield replacement business and go into Spanish telecommunications. Six months later, however, his Tele Latino business went down because it was over expanded but undercapitalized. After that, he sold his business and other properties, moved in with his in-laws, and started investing in real estate.  The money he made from his real estate investments made him decide he'd go into real estate business.

In his real estate beginnings, he started out by cold calling and door knocking, like he did when he was still doing windshield repairs. His real estate business went on hiatus for a couple of years when his wife fell prey to cancer. In that grim period of his life, he found his faith that helped him and his family through those tough times. Amazingly, after two years of treatment, his wife became free of cancer and with only $35, 000 to his name, Nick went back into real estate. From then on, he gradually grew his business until in 2015, their total units sold were  valued at $96 million… and this year, with their focus on providing incredible service to their clients, their total units sold is valued at $135 million!

So what was that "constant" that Nick looked to that helped him get from $10/day to $135 million? Two words:  goal setting. He believes that once you've set a goal and have that confidence to meet that goal, you can be a big success.
