Why I Play the Not I Game (and Maybe You Should Too)

Do you recall the awesome game of tag called Not I?  The last person to yell not I would end up being the person who chased everyone to tag someone else as It… and you would do all kinds of weird moves and contortions with your body so you were not tagged as It? Those were some good times growing up...

Let’s fast forward to today and your business model.  When looking at your role as the Rainmaker and how to most effectively use your skills whether you bring on a new project, a new business or venture I want to encourage you to replay the not I tag game.

There are three steps to playing the not I game in your business because that is the key to you owning a business and the key to getting things done without actually doing it yourself.

Ask yourself if not I then who?

Most entrepreneurs want to keep the control because you think you're the only one who can get the job done right.  Try to keep things real and think if for some reason you are out of commission or on vacation then who should be the person you trust to run your business?

How can I help?

Once you get past the resistance to maintain control you start to speculate different options of prospective candidates sitting in your hiring funnel.  In choosing a viable option you now ask yourself how can I help support that person to get them to a level of excellence? Then you start unraveling what details they need to learn, what kind of tools are needed for measuring metrics, accountability and milestones.  All the necessary systems and strategies that are going to get you to the overall objective of not I.

Accountability - trust but verify

Once you have loosened your grip on the reigns of control and now you’re sharing the responsibilities it is important not to forget to Inspect what you Expect.  You have to spend some time and energy mentoring the candidate to where they need to be in order for you to be comfortable in letting go all together.  Setting up that person for success will help them adapt more easily and help them to own their new responsibilities.

If you can master those three steps and play the not I game in your business then your bandwidth just became infinitely larger than before and you can continue the not I game to start new projects, ideas and increase the opportunity to make more work less and join the top 1% of your colleagues.
